The BMW i Vision Dee concept offered an early peek into the future of BMW’s electric vehicle design, which was quite revolutionary at the time. Now, a reimagined version of that concept, labeled as “Neue,” is making its debut at the IAA Mobility 2023 event in Munich. This iteration incorporates additional design cues and features that are slated for production.
The core shape of the BMW Vision Neue Klasse concept retains the essence of the former i Vision Dee. However, there’s more substance this time around. The front of the vehicle features a sloping “shark nose” hood, prominently showcasing two illuminated horizontal kidney grilles that extend to the bumper’s edge. These grilles house slanted LED running lights at each corner, with several lighting elements utilizing 3D printing, according to BMW.
The bottom of the bumper sports an upturned black diffuser, imparting a sportier appearance compared to the i Vision Dee. Additionally, the previous neon green dinner plate-sized wheels have been replaced with new 21-inch ones, paying homage to the classic cross-spoke design seen in BMW racing cars. The elongated taillights mirror the kidney grille and headlight combination at the front. Notably, the BMW logo, in its minimalist form, is printed on the front and rear fenders, eliminating traditional metal badges entirely.
BMW characterizes this design as “almost monolithic,” and this sleekness results in a 30% increase in range and 25% greater efficiency compared to any of the automaker’s current EV offerings. Complementing this is BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which promises a 20% higher density, 25% improved efficiency, and 30% faster charging.
While specific range figures are not disclosed, BMW has previously hinted at the possibility of achieving 621 miles (1,000 kilometers) on a single charge. The new eDrive system will be produced at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary, a facility under construction with a commitment to fossil fuel-free operations.
Inside the Neue Klasse, BMW introduces its latest iDrive infotainment system projected onto a distinctive parallelogram-like touchscreen. Familiar features like the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and multifunction steering wheel controls are retained. However, BMW is also introducing something called “Panoramic Vision.”
Panoramic Vision will make its debut in the production version of the Neue Klasse and serves as a complement to the traditional head-up display. It projects graphics directly into the driver’s field of vision, spanning the entire width of the windshield. The traditional head-up display remains available, offering basic information. Both the driver and front passenger can interact with Panoramic Vision through gesture controls.
The overall interior of the Neue Klasse embraces a minimalist retro style. Mustard yellow corduroy seats match the yellow accents on the dashboard and door panels. The steering wheel and screen on the dashboard are the only two elements that maintain the minimalist theme. Designers aimed for a clutter-free cabin, avoiding decorative chrome or leather, not only for aesthetics but also to reduce the carbon footprint during production. Even the front seats are anchored to the floor with a single bracket, enhancing rear legroom for passengers in the two lounge-style seats.
The production of the BMW Neue Klasse is scheduled to commence in 2025 at the Debrecen, Hungary, facility, with the electric vehicle anticipated to hit the road by 2026. Details regarding pricing, range, and charging remain undisclosed.
