The South Korean automaker Hyundai has released more details of the forthcoming Ioniq 6 EV. Debuted in June, the swoopy electric car will hit the roads before the end of this year with the US expecting it in early 2023. Apart from its exceptional design, it boasts one of the highest EV ranges in its segment.
Range
While the quoted 380 miles (610 kilometres) range is measured using the normally more kind WLTP cycle, it shouldn’t be much different from the EPA figures. To prove our point, we take the example of the rear-wheel drive Ioniq 5, which came with 315 miles (507 km) of WLTP figure and the EPA rated it at 303 miles (488 km). So, you can see there isn’t much difference.
Exterior Design
Sharing the E-GMP platform with its big brother, the question is how this EV sedan offers such a high range. Well, you will get the answer once you look at the Ioniq 6 borrowing most of its design cues from the remarkable Prophecy Concept, the automaker revealed in 2020. The slippery, sleek design renders the drag coefficient of 0.21, which is the lowest of any car the company has developed so far.
Similar to its sleek profile, the automaker offers gorgeous, wheel patterns for the EV sedan in 18 and 20 inches sizes. Besides, there are 12 exterior paint options and four interior shade combinations.
Interior
The interior is futuristic and neat just like the Ioniq 5 and we see small displays at both ends of the dash for a side-view camera feed. However, that will be available in select markets. Hyundai offers ambient lighting in 64 combinations and six pre-set themes. Speed Sync Lighting will modify the front-row glow according to the vehicle’s speed.
The new Hyundai EV will have the long-recline Relaxation Comfort Seats in the first row (available in specific markets only). These seats boast 30% less thickness to offer more room for the occupants. A large screen containing the instrument panel and infotainment displays allows you to control different vehicle functions and receive important information. The automaker will offer Over-The-Air (OTA) updates to keep it up to date with the passage of time.
Battery and Charging
Hyundai offers two powertrain options – a standard 53.0-kWh battery pack, rear-wheel drive, and one electric motor, and a bigger 77.4-kWh battery, rear- or all-wheel drive, and two electric motors. The latter generates 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque, similar to what we get from the Ioniq 5.
Again like the Ioniq 5, the new sedan EV can endure 800 volts, enabling the car to juice up from 10 to 80 per cent in as low as 18 minutes while connected to a 350-kW charger. Vehicle-to-load functionality is part of the package as well.
Safety
Hyundai ensures the safety of the Ioniq 6 passengers with a range of driver assistance functions that are part of High Driving Assist 2. The adaptive speed limit assist is standard while the junction and lane-change assists are optional for the lower trims and standard for the high-end models.
Availability
The automaker plans to start production in 2022 Q3 and deliver it to customers before the end of this year. However, US customers have to wait until early 2023 to get their hands on the new Ioniq 6. The pricing information will be revealed before the launch.
