Ford has released the power numbers for the upcoming Mustang. The seventh-generation Mustang’s most powerful model is the new Dark Horse which pumps out 500 horsepower and 418 pound-feet of torque. The GT comes on second with 480 horsepower, which buyers can improve to 486 hp by adding an upgraded exhaust. The EcoBoost engine also offers a little higher output at 315 hp.
Although Ford armed the Mustangs with more robust mills in the past, the fourth-gen Coyote V8 fitted in the Dark Horse is essentially the most powerful NA 5.0-litre production powerplant ever created by the Blue Oval. It employs updated internals, specifically shaped connecting rods, and an exclusive balanced crankshaft along with more solid camshafts. All the changes bring a slight power bump while retaining the 7500-rpm redline.
The same fourth-gen Coyote V8 also powers the Mustang GT, but here it creates 480 horsepower, similar to what we get in the Mustang Bullitt and Mach. As said earlier, buyers will require to opt for a performance exhaust system to improve the power delivery to 486 ponies and 418 lb-ft of torque, which is 3 lb-ft more without the optional exhaust. The power output remains the same for both manual and auto gearboxes.
Besides the naturally aspirated V8, Ford offers a turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder mill as an entry point into the 2024 Mustang lineup. The American automaker says it is totally new. Seeing the same output, some would believe it is not, but Ford says the new engine comes with the latest bore-to-stroke ratio, the latest direct injection system, and a number of other modifications to generate a slightly higher power output while improving the fuel economy rating. The EcoBoost delivers 315 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, which Ford says is the most muscular entry-level Mustang they have ever developed.
“Mustang has always pushed the envelope,” stated Ford Mustang Chief Engineer Ed Krenz. “From Mustang GT to Dark Horse, this is our best 5.0-liter V8 yet. It’s naturally aspirated awesomeness. And Mustang EcoBoost fans are also getting a boost in power to make every Mustang more fun and visceral to drive.”
The seventh-generation Mustang will first arrive in America next summer, while deliveries to other countries will follow later.
