Toyota introduced the fourth-generation Yaris in many flavors for different markets. The three- and five-door hatchback models, along with an elevated Yaris Cross, are normal in most countries. However, fans can also enjoy the performance-oriented Gazoo Racing (GR) Yaris in a few regions. Furthermore, the Yaris is available as a rebadged Mazda2, and now a sedan derivative is also out. Named the Yaris Ativ, the sedan recently broke cover in Thailand.
It is an excellent substitute for B-segment crossover, owing to its multitude of facilities available at an inexpensive price tag. The price lands between $15,300 and $19,500 (taken from Thai Baht), as per the variant selected.
For this price, the amenities are high standard, starting from 16-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, an eight-inch display, and a start button for the base Sport model. A notch above is the Smart trim with a bigger 9.0-inch touchscreen, a dashboard camera, and rear USB slots.
The Premium model is true to its name with automatic climate control, rear AC vents, and, surprisingly offering, adaptive cruise control. The top-of-the-line Premium Luxury uses a Pioneer sound system.
The subcompact sedan is full of safety tech, including standard pre-collision warning and Front/Lane Departure Alert. The high-level models, of course, get more driver assistance features.
Toyota’s infotainment system has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. In addition, the premium variants offer ambient lighting in 64 shades. The seats get standard fabric which can be upgraded to synthetic and genuine leather. The upgrades for the exterior include stripes and two distinct trunk lid spoilers.
The 2023 Yaris Ativ offers a normal power output as we expect from subcompact sedans. Toyota has fitted a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre four-cylinder mill pumping out a modest 94 hp (69 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 110 Nm (81 lb-ft) of torque at 4,400 rpm. The power goes to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission. The Sport mode is there for a slightly livelier drive, and the stopping power comes from all-around disc brakes, which is nice. Similar to the engine, the suspension is pretty normal – MacPherson strut on the front and a torsion beam on the rear.
While the automotive world is moving fast to create an SUV-dominant society, the Yaris Ativ is a welcome addition offering all the desirable features for a daily commute. It will compete well with the Dacia Logan in Europe.
The Japanese automaker will start its production at its Gateway Plant in Thailand and export it to more than 35 countries. We have no news yet regarding Ativ’s availability in the UAE yet.
