It has been at least two years since BMW is working on the third-generation BMW X1. The new 2023 X1 is here with a fresh look, more tech, a new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and an xDrive all-wheel drive. Let’s discuss its exterior design first.
Exterior
The 2023 BMW X1 gets a new bolder front face with fairly bigger, square-styled, radiator grilles and a noticeable headlight design. All the lights on the front and back are LED, while the narrower rear window gives the Sports Activity Vehicle a rougher look. The wide wheel arches render the vehicle a wider stance.
The new generation X1 grows in size from all angles. It is 1.7 inches longer at 177.2 in, 0.9 inches wider at 72.6 in, and 1.7 inches taller at 64.6. The increased size makes it roomier inside. The drag coefficient of 0.27 improves the X1’s driving dynamics, while an enhanced track width gives it a handling composure.
Interior
The five-seat cabin is modern, armed with advanced technologies. The overall increase in the size allows the passengers to enjoy more shoulder and elbow room while the BMW iDrive 8 infotainment takes the entertainment to a whole new level. The users can control the system through two displays – a 10.25-in instrument cluster and a 10.7-in navigation screen – contained in a single glass piece. Below the curved display, we can find a large air vent and a place for two cup holders, and a wireless charging pad for a mobile phone.
Other stand facilities include four USB-C ports, a 12-volt power socket placed in the center console and the cargo bay, and a Bluetooth interface. Those looking to enhance their multimedia experience can pay extra for a Harman Kardon first-class audio system with 12 speakers and tweeters. Furthermore, the interior has a camera, letting the driver take pictures from inside and forward to his/her mobile phone.
Powertrain
BMW offers only one powertrain option for the U.S. market. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo has been improved through the Miller combustion cycle, a new dual direct and port injection system, and other important revisions. The result is a peak output of 241 horsepower (177 kilowatts) and 295 pound-feet (400 Newton-meters) of torque. The engine mates to an improved seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an xDrive all-wheel-drive system. With this powertrain, the new BMW X1 can accelerate to 60 miles per hour (0-96 kilometers per hour) in 6.2 seconds.
The M Sport Package features steering wheel gearshift paddles for “very quick manual gear changes.” The shift paddles allow the driver to engage the Sport Boost function by pulling the left-hand shift paddle for a minimum of one second. This function unlocks the X1’s full potential.
The automaker says that they re-engineered nearly all parts of the single-joint spring strut front axle, and gave the option of adaptive M suspension for the first time, allowing drivers to lower the ride height by 0.6 inches.
Price and Availability
The 2023 BMW X1 will be available in America in the fourth quarter at a starting price of $38,600. It does not include the $995 destination fee. It should also reach our shores soon with a slightly higher price tag. The 2022 X1 starts at AED 177,554 in the UAE.
