While the previous generation Toyota Yaris came in North America as a rebadged Mazda2, it is totally opposite in Europe where fourth-generation Mazda2 came as a rebadged Yaris. Interestingly, the third-generation model will continue selling along with it.
The association of these two Japanese brands will permit Mazda to introduce its first full hybrid vehicle in Europe, uniting with many mild-hybrid models and coming before a new array of PHEVs planned to unveil from 2023. This self-charging Mazda2 powers up in electric mode owing to the battery that sends power to the electric motor generating 79 horsepower (59 kilowatts).
The electric motor is assisted by a naturally aspirated, 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol mill creating 91 hp (68 kW). The hybrid powertrain yields a total of 114 hp (85 kW), which would be enough for any city driving conditions. Mazda says, with this power, it can hit 100 km/h from a stagnant position in 9.7 seconds and top out at 109 mph (175 km/h).
According to the vehicle’s wheel size (15 or 16 inches), the 2022 Mazda2 would deliver as little as 3.8 litres (61.9 miles per gallon) in the WLTP combined cycle and emanate only 87 g/km in its economic state. The hybrid powertrain is capable of keeping the ideal balance between fuel economy and performance.
The 2022 Mazda2 will be accessible in three variants: Hybrid Pure, Hybrid Agile, and Hybrid Select. Since it is a rebadge Yaris, it has the same 286 litres and 2,560 mm wheelbase. Similarly, it enjoys a five-star Euro NCAP rating.
The Mazda2 hybrid looks like a good car for Europe. It will hit the roads in Spring next year.
